PHOTOGRAPHY BY STUART RICHARDS

At 1149 Feet tall the Stratosphere is the tallest observation tower in the United States.

project

The tower included sophisticated computer modeling of dynamic behavior and nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete shaft. Wind tunnel studies were contracted through Cermak Peterka Petersen, Inc.

construction

12 level upper accommodation framed steel supported by 775 feet of reinforced concrete resting on a mat foundation.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BROCK RADKE

Largest LED display in Las Vegas

project

Located on the world famous Las Vegas Strip at Harmon Boulevard, the immense curved LED display is the largest in Las Vegas.   Built by Yesco Signs, the LED display is the main attraction, and the principle feature of the building.  This is the first building designed by Mendenhall Smith around the use of LED signage.

construction

Extensive steel framing with some masonry walls. The lateral system consists of some deep steel truss moment frames to provide open floor spaces, some exposed steel braced frames, and masonry shear walls. A steel space frame is used to provide support for the 70 Foot tall rooftop curved LED screen.

Orlando Eye Giant Observation Wheel

project

Located along International Drive in Orlando Florida, the Orlando Eye is a major tourist attraction. The giant wheel is one of the best viewing spots at just over 400 feet in height.

construction

400 feet in height
Opened May 2015
Mendenhall Smith collaborated with the wheel manufacturer and Architect in design of the foundation, support systems, and terminal building.

SERVING THE STUDENTS AT UNLV CAMPUS

project

Located on the University of Las Vegas Campus, this building provide administrative space and registration services for students.

construction

The building is constructed of metal roof and floor joists supported by masonry walls. A large steel canopy provides shade as well as accents the entry area.

Paul B. Sogg School of Architecture Building

project

Classrooms and studios are positioned in a simple, 2-story rectangular bar while
administrative offices and a spectacular 35-foot volume encloses an open library space where students frequently hold design juries and architecture lectures that are open to the public.

construction

This steel and masonry structure houses the new school of architecture at UNLV, the only such school in the state of Nevada.
Special architectural and structural detailing is used to create the exterior shading devices including vertical fins and extended cantilevered roof eaves.

Large rental car facility with constant traffic.

project

Providing a central location for rental car companies with a close proximity to McCarran International Airport.

construction

This facility consists of long span steel trusses and a structure of steel moment frames and masonry bearing and shear walls.

BOUTIQUE, SHOPPING AND DINNING

project

This project offers a Downtown Container intimate shopping experience using shipping containers. And it’s the perfect way to shop small and support local businesses, as most of the owners operate their boutique.

construction

Has began construction in Staten Island New York
Will be the tallest wheel in the world (pending completion of the proposed Dubai Wheel)

Follow the Construction Progress here.

construction

Wheel accommodates 36 capsules with a 40 person capacity. Design of the wheel included sophisticated computer modeling and analysis. The Rim is 570 ft in diameter supported by 144 large structural steel cables that are more than 3 in in diameter. The structure is supported by 18ft diameter legs which provide resistance to wind and seismic forces.

SERVING THE STUDENTS AT UNLV CAMPUS

project

Located on the University of Las Vegas Campus, this building serves as an education facility for pre-school aged children from birth to 5 years old.
